History 历史

In 1979, St. Louis was linked with the city of Nanjing (formally Nanking) and became the FIRST U.S. municipality to have a sister city in the People’s Republic of China. The St. Louis – Nanjing Sister City Committee has sponsored many exchanges that have touched thousands of people in our two communities from school children to corporate leaders. Mayors of both cities have led official trade delegations and given enthusiastic support to our sister city activities.

Nanjing, formerly as Nanking and Nankin, is a city situated in the heartland of the lower Yangtze River region in China, which has long been a major center of culture, education, research, politics, economy, transport networks and tourism. It is the 2nd largest city in East China region, with an area of 6,600 km2 (2,500 sq. mi) and a total population of 8,270,500. The Nanjing Metropolitan Region covers over 60,000 km2, with a population of over 30 million.

圣路易斯是美国密苏里州东部大城市，位于美国最长的密西西比河中游河畔，几乎处于美国的几何中心，在地理位置上具有重要的战略意义。

圣路易斯在1764年由法国皮毛商人建立，名字来源于法国国王路易九世。因其对天主教传播的贡献，路易九世死后被教皇授予“圣”尊号，圣路易斯城也就因此被命名。
